13TH (2016)

10/19/2016 - 13th (2016) - 8/10

Profound, troubling, and essential; 13th is a tremendous documentary bringing to light a system of societal oppression in an informative and impactful way. There are things I am not totally in love with (film drags on 2nd half, over reliance on "cool" graphics, disputable formatting, & some isolated questionable politicking), but the film as a whole is an agreeable (though disheartening) effort that packs both a visceral and intellectual wallop.

This is a sobering examination of our nation and its issues, especially in the current political climate. It is not perfect, but it feels like the type of movie everyone should see. Quality filmmaking and a gratifying (yet demoralizing) documentary experience. This is THE film about the racial plight of our nation (more so than Birth IMO) to see currently.
