12/6/2016 - The Handmaiden (2016) - 7+/8-/10

So magically gorgeous. The elegance of period piece England interpreted through a contentious Japanese/Korean sensibility, all in service of a sly sensual ruse. So quirky, in humor, horror, and voice- Park has such a vitality and singleness to his viewpoint and vision. Utilizing all the tools of a master filmmaker, Park keeps us intrigued, entertained, and uncertain throughout the length of the feature.

With his cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, Park masterfully frames, composes, and executes a gorgeous film. The visual mood, paired with the terrific performances by the cast and a sultry & winding script, make for an amazing film.

Though they have their place, I found the sex scenes near pornographic, in both their length and depth. Softcore, but near-exploitative and “male gazey” (similar to Blue Is The Warmest Color, but less emotional). The women were on display in multiple scenes, seemingly for shock/titillation, not reinforcing the story. It was a matter of seconds and editing, but I questioned the need and taste. But with the disgusting depiction of the uncle and the criticisms of the foolish male beliefs regarding knowledge/dominance in sex, maybe there is a purpose. It just took me out of the film, which was detrimental in my opinion.

Despite my minor qualms with some of the depictions of the sexuality and possibly some of the offbeat odd comedy, I really enjoyed this film. Park’s camera work and staging was amazing and I loved the visual flourishes throughout. Those things sweetened an already intensely pleasurable story that proved hard to keep a grasp on. If a bit too much intense Asian lesbian erotica doesn’t work for you, I would suggest passing, but for everyone else, enjoy!
