ISLE OF DOGS (2018)

4/13/18 - Isle of Dogs (2018) - 7-/10

Though distinctly problematic (white savior, distinct sense of the Other, tone deaf symbology, and a Westerner’s Japanese fantasy play), it is still unimaginably gorgeous, extremely fun, and undeniably sweet. There is a magical wind that, despite my mental protestations, my heart got swept up in. It gushes love and embraces the sentimental spirit of an ideal, be that canine/companion love, the magnetic Japanese allure or the boy adventure wish fulfillment. My reservations keep me from falling madly in love, but the scope & scale of the artistry and amazement masterfully paired with an enthusiasm and a touching (maybe the most?) Andersonian flair make it a winner in my book.

I thought about writing more about the intricacies of the ill conceived elements, the larger cultural touristry, the dazzling whimsy, and my grappling with the intellectual juxtaposition of those warring aspects. I have rolled the weaponized words around in my head, but I don’t have the drive to lobb them. I can’t say that the film will sustain its esteem, especially as the components get corrupted with consideration, but my first inclination is of a tempered adoration.
