7/22/19 - What Keeps You Alive (2018) - 6-/10

A tremendously simple film, but with a twist on the horror procedural. It keeps you guessing, exposes itself, and then puts you on edge again. We have seen similar work but it is keeping it fresh and fun. It isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it is retreading the tires a bit. 

What it keeps you is invested and intrigued. The mystery isn’t long lasting, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t keeping you hooked and unsure of what will happen next. It is dark and twisted, and a delightful diversion from usual horror/slasher tropes. Being completely female centered and uncompromising, wthout the need to exploit the lesbian relationship, certainly gained points in my book.

The villain is sharply savage but not over played. I also appreciated the protagonist’s believable horror and struggles. So much of this film just works and keeps it fun while never letting the momentum decrease, right up to the rocky end. It’s not perfect, but worth checking out.
