THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY (2019)

1/14/2020 - The Edge of Democracy (2019) - 7/10

An interesting examination into a political shake-up, and the factors pulling a country apart.

I was first exposed to this film seeing its detractors criticize its lack of even handedness in dealing with the political landscape and the parties involved. Obviously, the filmmaker had greater access to the key elemental figures and had a point of view that immersed her film’s dialogue with the changing landscapes. But, I felt less that it was a concentrated hit piece and more a reflection that country’s (and, to be honest, of my own country’s) dividedness, nondemocratic leanings, and the adamant force of opinion that is at work. It’s this personal reflective quality that might have been the most remarkable aspect of the viewing experience for me.

I can see how those of the opposite political persuasion might interpret this film as having some bias and lacking impartiality. It flatly does, and there are two sides to most stories, but I don’t think that dissuades from the innate quality of the film itself. It is told from a certain point of view, as is everything, but it seemed driven to shed light on deeper truths rather than paint a swathe.

The access is extraordinary, as is the summation, which made it feel so special to me.
