BECKY (2020)

8/14/20 - Becky (2020) - 4+/10

This little Home Alone on PCP film does provide for some vicious gore that it revels in to excess, usually feeling replete and glutinous. Definitely some violence glorification and sociopathic expressionism. Disturbing and unwholesome is our protagonist, their journey and their end, which without a selling purpose left me hollow.

It doesn’t really pull punches with the violence or death. Everything, from the shots, mis en scene, and the parallels/metaphors (Match cut juxtapositions - prison and school), is up close and in your face. There isn’t any breathing room between blatant purpose and meaning. It does have some gruesomeness and it loves some of its 70s horror/exploitation & some Raimi, bloodily dripping with both.

This film is extreme, and purposefully so. Especially casting two comedians in serious and tortured/tortuerer roles capitalizes on its playing off expectations to gut you. But often it felt harsh for its own sake, and sacrifices logic and reason to exercise its aims. The film just ridiculously halts for her to radicalize and prepare. It jumps in, happy to dive into the blood, without looking to see if their is a goal down at the bottom of that deadpool.

The unexplained key McGuffin was solid, reminding one of old school uncanny film idols driving plots. But it was only a pittance in the grand scheme. It’s pacing is odd and it’s internal logic wonky. For the torturous and demented, but might be too much for the less inclined. A Joker for tween girls, full of extreme violence and justified glorification of sociopathy.
