BLACK SITE (2018)

The “son of John Carpenter” does an action movie about a BPRD-esque organization that “deports” Lovecraftian Elder Gods. It is like a live action comic book that ticks a lot of my boxes. Honestly though, the film is lacking. It could probably use another rewrite, some interesting and ingratiating character scenes, and some higher than B quality the rest... but I kinda liked this fun time.
It is mostly slightly over serious, but I enjoyed the menace they tried to project. I also appreciated the female-centric Aliens-ness to it. The female heavy was too much (double katanas and slash scar down her eye, in her blonde ninja gear - it’s like she fell right out of a manga.) but its still fun even if it is turned up a few clicks beyond.
There is a galactic motif in a series recurring shots. They are the best part of the film and were reminiscent of the finest aesthetic in a similar feature: The Void. The film can’t sustain the quality of those cinematic jewels, but their highlighting presence and importance was a necessity to keep me engaged.
Generally, I probably wouldn’t go for this kind of movie. It is a little hokey and a bit ridiculous, but I loved the warm candy core. It is entertaining, being big and over-the-top, while being in a small and limited package. It doesn’t deserve any awards, but it is a fun time for those inclined.
