THE HAND OF GOD (2021)

3/9/22 - The Hand of God (2021) - 6/10

Slice of life with the quirks of family. In the same way Branagh made a film somewhat based on his life as a child, all be it wrapped around The Troubles, Sorrentino made an shaded and askew take on his growing up but hovering around Diego Maradona’s arrival at Napoli and his infamous “Hand of God” goal. Idiosyncrasies, the twisted collisions of puberty, the bitter sting of tragedy, and personal-philosophical non sequiters swirl in an alluring, somewhat funny, and always slightly off-kilter tale of human complexities.

I enjoyed its style but felt a little cratered out by the malleability of the narrative and its non-contiguous directions. Solid, but Sorrentino isn’t always my cup of tea.
