3/1/23 - Sea Beast (2022) - 6-/10

A very adept example of the quality animation coming out currently dolling up a lukewarm kid’s mariner tale. Essentially, it’s Moby Dick meets King Kong/Godzilla on the fantastical seven seas. Though it does take slightly longer to reach the point I expected and predicted, it does go exactly where you think it will. Some solid action and decent characters, but the story is a bit lacking.

What really shines here is the animation. The water effects are pretty spectacular and the detail put into the world and its inhabitants is praise-worthy. There is a cartoonish undertone but the craftwork is so lithe, smooth, and snappy. This is a good looking film.

Overall, it is a solid family film night. Perhaps a bit longer than necessary and the ultimate villain is underdeveloped and said worldbuilding element under-utilized, it still works well enough.
