ELLLE (2016)
12/10/2016 - Elle (2016) – 7+/10
What an odd film. The strange interplay of gender politics & power (especially in the niche world of video games & their production), sexual civics and control dynamics, and the meshing of love and lust throughout all of life dominate this film. All the while centering on this cold & damaged, while being serene and existentially content, woman of power and subjugation. It's acutely subversive, unethical, uninhibited, and coyly snide. Not sure if I truly like it or just greatly appreciate it. It is a work that is not asking for your permission nor your quaint acquiescence. There is a mini-sexual power play in the logos of this film's existence that you either learn to enjoy or revile in its alienness.
Huppert is quite strong, but the character is so unpinnable. Her psyche is betwixt and between, with only a stern subtlety to divine the nuances’ roots. I grew into, as does she. But once she gets you to her space, she owns not only it, but the film and our total devotion.
I did not get the "rompy comedy" purported to be here. There is a dark cunning wit flowing through, but the drama and intrigue set its core as distinctly unfunny. It is difficult and tangled, in an enjoyable way, but not “funny”.
Be that as it may, it is without a doubt gripping. Pulling in different directions, keeping you unbalanced with its interesting drive and unconventional interpersonal plotting. This is grown up, complex, grey, and unflinching. A strong work, but not for everyone.
