THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY (2014)
8/14/2015 - The Duke of Burgundy (2014) - 8+/10
Enrapturingly sensuous, without displaying even a hint of R-rated flesh. An, at once, both devastating and passionate examination of the harsh and universal truths that make up the sexual/romantic politics of life - all without a single frame of a man in the entirety of the film. A blissful starkness of photography, languid in its length of shot but charged with energy/intensity. A passion for color, but with the dourest of palette, rarely shifting from the muted browns of decaying leaves or the haunting darkness of faded fabric.
This is a unique cinematic jaunt in a world that may be wholly alien to some, but completely identifiable for those striving for understanding in & of their love. Speaking tomes in its simplicity of action and sparseness of dialogue. I loved this "Malick meets the Secretary, cranked up to love instead of lust". Some might say you shouldn't watch this with your grandmother, but she's been around the block and would probably love it too. I have to imagine this is the "fetish" movie they should have swept the world, instead of that 50 Shades of Fake. Can't wait to see what this director does next.
