CARTEL LAND (2015)
1/18/2016 - Cartel Land (2015) - 6/10
An intense and in-the-moment documentary. It cuts deep with its fortunately timed shots and disconcerting emotional/political realities but loses its way over the duration.
Pointedly topical examination of the cartels' influence and breadth, showing more the effects on the citizenry in both Mexico and America, as they rise up with arms to battle the drug lords' influence. As opportune and poignant as the documentarian's filming was, it spread itself too thin covering both sides of the border, especially when the compelling side of the film so outweighs what the other brings. That paired with the personal downfalls that felt thrust upon the story, rather than naturally being told with time. Granted, catching each moment of those journeys is nigh impossible for the film, but it still felt a bit choppy and uneven.
A good film with some important stories to tell, but not quite tight and seasoned enough.
