GLASS (2018)
5/5/19 - Glass (2018) -4-/10
How pedestrian and unsatisfying. It has the problem of wasting expectations, being fairly dull and dispelling all interest. We lose what we had and find our new possibility wholly underwhelming. This certainly isn’t Shyamalan’s worst, but I didn’t find much here to grab me or thrill me. The Unbreakable-verse dies a glassy eyed ho-hum death and I certainly didn’t care.
Bruce feels like he signed a Non-Acting Agreement a few years back and is barred from emoting or trying. Too much of the film we get nothing from SLJ. And McAvoy, though good and the only one of these guys doing anything here, the shine has been rubbed off that gem from overuse and a “samsies” effect. There is just nothing special the 2nd time around for him and his multitude of characters.
I hate these apparently super important comic shop scenes. Some weird and poorly idealized version of pseudo reality. It reads as phony and trite, the type of bizarre genre garbo someone who has no knowledge or experience would conjure. It is like some weird fanfic or online erotica; where no one talks with normalcy, nothing happens with a sense of reality, and the entire construction pours from someone with no sense of experience or knowledge.
And can we stop in any film leaving a crumpled bill on the counter and waking away? Does change not exist in movie land? How does she know what to pay? Who intersects like that? It is on par with the post-coital “I gotta wear a sheet from the bed so that my lover doesn’t see my naked body they just had sex with” bs. Bin the lot of them!
This film just felt vacant and unenthusiastic. The plot is concise, but when it isn’t making sense it is lying there like a gasping fish. It doesn’t bring a dark brooding thriller aspect or a twisty genre bending uniqueness, it just slowly exhales the momentum built up from Unbreakable and Split. Shyamalan’s “twist” here also just left me shrugging my shoulders. I did not care; who could? I am done with this world and solidly behind doing away with any more of these films.
