I AM MOTHER (2019)
6/7/19 - I Am Mother (2019) - 5-/10
A solid sci-fi parable. Sure, it kind of breaks down when you dissect it, but the concept was serviceable and the design & look was good. The elements hit here, though only just. Still, it does its motherly duty and raises a viably average film specimen.
In a post-apocalyptic world, where the only human is grown and cared for a benevolent android. She is alone and has never seen another human. Personally, I didn’t buy her education and upbringing. She doesn’t react enough to the introduction of mice, people or dogs. These should be mind melting revelatory experiences, but she is way too normalized about them. In fact, she is oddly ordinary and adjusted, which just wouldn’t occur. She has to be so conformed for the story that they want to tell to work, but a young woman who has only been raised by a robot and never experienced another soul would have legitimate issues wither her personality and interactions. There is no Cast Away effect for her, which kept it from really clicking with me.
But, as a conceptual story that was executed on the acting, design, CGI and basic script level, it was pretty decent. A very watchable and interesting little flick that clicks but won’t stick.
