This is a pretty damn good dark dramedy (a bit more dour and kinda more f*cked up than a Harold & Maude or a Four Lions), that really impressed me with its generationally topical biting wit and affecting heartfelt drama. I was impressed not only by Carmichael in front of the camera but by his feature debut nous behind the camera. He keenly lets the moments of desperate despair linger for necessary effect while punctuating those interplays with comradery & comedic cacophony.
I found this a moving experience, ready and willing to face the most difficult question of ending a life, while finding the icy companion of inescapable depression and existential despair to be a chilly belly laugh. Caught in the tidal swirl of chaos that a final pitiless day of struggling restitution might bring, truly enjoyable flashpoints soothingly contour the elliptical exertions and impending fatalism.
I don’t know if “comforting” is an adjective that can be used to label this film or its ending, but satisfying in the knowledge of the toil and the empathetic release. There is a vindication and admittance in the truth of life’s endeavor and suicides emancipation. Perhaps if you have labored with such ultimate nullification, it might feel all that much more impactful and relatable… Also, there are jokes. No matter what you bring to the film, I think this was good and well worth the watch.
